What does this indicator measure?
This indicator denotes the longitudinal trends in the number of nonprofit organizations present within the counties of the Dallas Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area (PMSA). Specifically, this indicator reports the number of nonprofits that are classified within the Arts, Culture, and Humanities core code category of the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE). These data are collected from the National Center for Charitable Statistics as reported by the IRS Business Master Files.
Why is this indicator important?
Undoubtedly, nonprofit organizations working within the arts, culture, and humanities sector are important elements of community life and are essential components of community-building processes. Not only do these organizations play a critical role in the shaping of a community’s quality of life, they also have significant economic impact. From this perspective, understanding the trends in the presence of such nonprofit organizations becomes important for community and urban development and revitalization efforts.
Nonprofit organizations working within the arts, culture, and humanities sector are also important because they often facilitate the discovery and development of emerging artists and cultural organizations. In addition, nonprofits that work within this sector serve as a catalyst for helping to generate public and private philanthropic support for the arts.
How are we doing?
According to data obtained from the National Center for Charitable Statistics at the Urban Institute's Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy (which compiles information on all nonprofits reporting financial information to the IRS on Form 990), the Dallas PMSA had a total of 260 arts, culture, and humanities nonprofit organizations during 2005. These 260 organizations are classified within the Arts, Culture, and Humanities core code category of the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE). The following observations can be made about the presence of these organizations in the eight counties of the Dallas PMSA:
- The 260 organizations in the Dallas PMSA during 2005 represent nearly 20% of the total 1,329 arts, culture, and humanities nonprofits present in the state of Texas during 2005.
- The 260 organizations in the Dallas PMSA during 2005 represent a 14.0% increase above the number of arts, culture, and humanities nonprofits present in 2004 (228). Statewide, the number of arts, culture, and humanities nonprofits increased by only 10.8% between 2004 and 2005.
- Since 2001, more than half of all arts, culture, and humanities nonprofit organizations in the Dallas PMSA are located in Dallas County.
- Among the counties of the Dallas PMSA, Collin, Dallas, Ellis, and Hunt Counties experienced an increase in the number of arts, culture, and humanities nonprofit organizations. The counties of Denton, Henderson, Kaufman, and Rockwall experienced no change in their respective number of arts, culture, and humanities nonprofit organizations.
