What does this indicator measure?
This indicator measures the locations of area cultural arts facilities and their relationship to the geographic distribution of Dallas area youth.
Why is this indicator important?
This indicator is important because the geographic location of cultural arts facilities has a direct impact on the number and types of consumers able to access and enjoy them. The Greater Dallas Area has a concentration of major cultural facilities in the downtown corridor. A notable deficiency in the distribution of community-scale facilities in proximity to the concentrations of the city's youth (many of whom do not have access to transportation for distances of more than 1 mile) may indicate a need for cultural enrichment programs and facilities closer to the neighborhoods where they live.
How are we doing?
The majority of Dallas’ major arts and cultural facilities are either in or near downtown Dallas, with fewer cultural programs or facilities in the areas with high youth populations.

Cultural arts and facilities and the distribution of
the youth population by zip code for Dallas County
for the year 2000.
According to the Dallas Community Cultural Plan, a broad distribution of cultural centers is important in order to meet the needs of the cultural community in the various neighborhoods of the city. These cultural centers would become the nucleus for arts programming, arts education programs, and artist training programs that cultivate young artists and enhance community activities. Centers are recommended in the following areas:
- North Oak Cliff
- South Oak Cliff
- West Dallas
- Love Field
- North Dallas
- Pleasant Grove
